工作坊2:
Abstract: In this workshop I will first outline briefly some recent approaches to understanding students’ motivation for English language learning. These include analyzing students’ attitudes to English and learning, considering students’ readiness for self-regulation, and exploring their ‘ideal self’ in relation to English. Then we will focus on strategies that teachers can use to support motivation in the classroom. Based on a simple model of the ‘5Ts’ of motivation proposed by Renandya (2014) –Teacher, Teaching method, Task, Text and Test –participants will discuss the essential strategies that teachers can use with respect to each ‘T’. The results will be compared to the views expressed by a group of 39 advanced Chinese learners of English studying in Hong Kong.
Bill Littlewood worked for several years in secondary schools and teacher education in the UK, where he was also a member of several professional committees for modern language teaching and served as President of the British Association for Language Teaching. He was also involved in Council of Europe projects. Since coming to Hong Kong in 1991 to join an EFL curriculum project, he has worked at tertiary institutions and served on several government committees. His books Communicative Language Teaching and Foreign and Second Language Learning (Cambridge University Press) have been used widely in teacher education and translated into several languages. He has presented plenary papers at many international conferences and published widely on applied linguistics and language teaching.
